Bogotá. December, 2020. Donating blood is an individual responsibility and a necessary step toward building a better country—and not just in the midst of natural or public health disasters. We need to show social cohesion and solidarity and accept solidarity as an ongoing obligation that supports development, Asocolflores and Fededcacao stated.

“Committed from the Heart,” an initiative that the associations have jointly led over the past several months to promote decent and mutually respectful relations between Colombians, gave a flower and a chocolate to anyone who visited one of the IDCBIS locations throughout Bogotá to donate blood, shoring up the local and national bloody supply.

This campaign is carried out with support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, ProColombia, the National Association of Colombian Businessmen, and the Society of Colombian Farmers, which have come together to promote donating blood as a collective responsibility that helps Colombia meet Sustainable Development Objective 3, health and wellbeing, through the safe and ample distribution of blood nationwide.

The blood the IDCBIS collects is distributed principally to Bogotá hospitals that attend to the needs of disadvantaged communities, as well as to other communities that struggle to collect blood and suffer from chronic shortages in their hospitals, Quibdó, Turbo o Inírida. “This distribution helps assure the life, health, and wellbeing of Colombia, and we all share the responsibility to do our part,” observed Augusto Solano, president of Asocolflores.
