During the week of March 7th through 11th, flower growers and hybridizers will gather in Bogota to visit plantations near the city and learn about the new carnation varieties that will set the trends this coming season.
2022. This event will be hosted by nine national and international breeders, with the coordination of Asocolflores, the Colombian Association of Flower Exporters, and forms part of the activities carried out to globally promote the new varieties of Dianthus, more widely known as carnations.
The different breeds of this flower produced in Colombia will be exhibited to local producers and importers from the United States, Japan, and Canada. One of the great attractions during the “Dianthus Week 2022” is the presentation of more than 250 varieties defined by their magical textures and colors which will fix consumer preferences during the upcoming seasons.
Augusto Solano, Asocolflores CEO, states that “the event is of great importance for the contacts that our sector maintains at international level, and will allow interaction of the buyers from different countries with the carnations and with the breeders at various farms.”
The guild leader added: “…this is a unique opportunity for our country to show the international community the reasons why we are the main producer and exporter of carnations around the world”.
During 2021, carnations ranked second place in cut flower exports from Colombia, with a total of US$256 million, represented in 51,785 tons that accounted for a growth of 25% in value and 23% in volume, when compared with 2020.
Flavia Santoro, President of Procolombia, pointed out that “the Dianthus Week 2022 is solid evidence of how the hard work and resilience of the floriculture industry is translated into new opportunities, moving from reactivation to growth, and becoming an example of how national enterprises and producers are key to the country´s development.”
17% of the 7,665 hectares planted with flowers for export in Colombia, are carnations; in other words, over 910 hectares, of which about 97% are in Cundinamarca. The main market for the national carnations is the United States with a 44% share in volume, followed by Japan and the Netherlands with 15% and 11%, respectively.
According to information from Ceniflores, the Asocolflores Colombian Center for Floriculture Innovation, the new varieties of carnations launched during the Dianthus Week 2022 are a significant contribution to improving the competitiveness of Colombian floriculture vis-à-vis a demanding and changing market where flowers are an aspirational product.
